Our Mission

Salem’s Light is dedicated to decreasing overpopulation, alleviating the suffering of outside dogs, and improving the lives of dogs through community outreach, education, advocacy, and proactive spay and neuter.

Salem’s Light incorporates a range of community-based initiatives in the metro Richmond area to advance our mission. These activities include:

• Performing targeted community outreach to underserved neighborhoods.

• Providing basic supplies to owners in need.

• Improving living conditions of outside dogs and encouraging owners to bring outside dogs into the home, especially during extreme weather.

• Connecting owners with free or low-cost spay and neuter services to proactively address the root cause of overpopulation.

• Assisting owners with additional medical care, as needed, or connecting them with free or low-cost options.

• Building a network of information and resources to benefit owners.

• Promoting responsible dog ownership through education, advocacy, and awareness campaigns.

• Conducting routine wellness and/or vaccination clinics.

• Helping to facilitate increased adoptions from animal control agencies through temperament testing and promotion.

• Partnering with local animal control agencies, rescue groups, and other organizations to help advance these goals.
